Mauricio Pauly (b. 1976 San José, Costa Rica) studied composition in Costa Rica, Miami and Boston (USA) with Lukas Foss, Richard Cornell, Fredrick Kaufman and others. His music has been performed by the Studio New Music Moscow, the UMZE Ensemble, the Ikarus Chamber Players, the Iturriaga Quartet and other ensembles and soloists in Costa Rica, USA, Spain, Hungary and Russia. Recent awards include the 2004 Esther Kahn Award, first prize in the VIII Pablo Sorozabal Composition Competition and in the 2005 Budapest Clavicembalo Foundation Composition Competition. After his graduation from Boston University, traveled to Russia with a group of fellow composers to attend classes with Vladimir Tarnopolski and to present their music at the American Cultural Center in Moscow. Later that year Mauricio moved to Budapest where he spent a year composing and studying independently. During 2005-6 he lived in the Netherlands and attended the Sonology Course at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Currently lives in the UK where he is pursuing a research-based PhD at the Novars Research Centre for Electroacoustic Composition within the University of Manchester. His performance project, Leche Vaqera, was premiered this past August in two sold-out concerts in San José, Costa Rica. Earlier that month, the Iturriaga Quartet performed his Cuarteto Alberto at the opening concert of the Quincena Musical in San Sebastián, Spain. His harpsichord piece, Forebe Aneba, was premiered in November 2006 by Dalma Cseh at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, followed by a a live concert broadcast from the Hungarian Radio Studios this past January 2007. Mauricio is currently working on a new piece for the Budapest-based Trio Lignum as part of a collaboration with the AltaVoz Ensemble of which he is a founding member.
